Shanghai, China - Saint Lucia's Levern Spencer finished eighth in women's High Jump at last weekend's Samsung Diamond League meeting. In rainy conditions, most of the world's top jumpers struggled, and the soon-to-be 28-year-old from Babonneau was no exception.
China's Zheng Xingjuan almost pulled off an upset in the event, which she lost in a jump-off to World indoor champion Chaunte Lowe of the USA. The pair both cleared 1.92m, then failed at 1.95m, but in the jump-off, Lowe eventually prevailed, clearign 1.87m in the driving rain.
Spencer, a three-time Central American and Caribbean champion and a Commonwealth bronze medalist, cleared 1.84m on her third trial, the same height as Ukraine's Vita Styopina. But Styopina cleared on her second attempt and ended up in seventh place.
