2016 Guy Brown League Gets Underway

Dig Set Point
The 2016 Guy Brown Memorial National Volleyball League is underway, with some new wrinkles. There is a new women's team out of Laborie, and a new venue. The new team is Phoenix 758 Volleyball, who will be playing their "home" games in Micoud. The new venue is the Vide Boutielle Secondary School, which has been used already for the Eastern Caribbean Volleyball Association (ECVA) Under-23 Championships earlier this year.

The first first-round games were played in Micoud. Phoenix 758 entertained Jet Setters. Jet Setters got the better of this encounter winning 25-5, 25-9, 25-13. Southern Stars men entertained Jet Setters, the defending champions beating their hosts in a surprisingly close matchup, 3-2.

At Vide Boutielle, Le Club played host to a further two first-round fixtures. In this year's tournament Le Club is featuring three women's teams and one men's team. Le Club 1 beat Le Club 3, 25- 14, 25-15, 25-9. Dig Set Point thrashed Le Club 2, 25-20, 25-14, 25-18.

This years Bank of Saint Lucia Guy Brown Memorial League is being played on a home and away basis in the first round, giving teams the advantage of playing in front of their supporters.

This year's tournament highlights the increase in participation of young women in the sport of volleyball. The newest volleyball club, Phoenix 758, caters for players islandwide. It is an  encouraging development for the future of the sport.

The tournament took a break for the NORCECA Beach Volleyball Tour, which has hosted this past weekend in Saint Lucia. Action resumes this coming weekend.
