St Lucia's Mitchell Joins MSU

Pernell Mithcell is the latest St Lucian to take up an athletics scholarship at Missouri State University. Pernell follows a distinguished line of runners, including Augustina Charles, Michelle Baptiste, Verneta Lesporis, Jineill vite and Leander Ernest, all of whom established national records in their respective events during their time under Missouri State Director of Track and Field and Cross Country Ronald Boyce.

Pernell joins a 23-member recruiting class for the upcoming 2010-11 cross country and track and field season, one of the largest recruiting classes ever at Missouri State. "We think this incoming class is a very talented class," Boyce said. "More than anything, we were able to cover every spectrum of track and field, from distance to sprints to throws, so I think we did a good job."

Mitchell, 19, is a transfer from the Vieux-Fort Comprehensive Secondary School, and a resident of La Ressource, Vieux Fort. The newest member of the Bears has competed at successive CARIFTA Games in St Lucia and the Cayman Islands, and her personal-best marks are 12.03 and 24.90 in the 100m and 200m races. The diminutive National Champion is a member of the Abilene Wildcats track club.
