FAYETTEVILLE - Makeba Alcide opened the calendar year 2011 in style with podium finishes in three events, personal-best marks in four and the first new St Lucia national athletics record for the season, besting her one-year-old performance for the 60m hurdles. Competing at the Razorback Invitational, hosted by her school, University of Arkansas, Makeba also made the podium in the Shot Put and High Jump.
Bahamas native Ivanique Kemp won the hurdles event in 8.46 seconds, but Makeba broke the St Lucia national record twice on the way to third place. She ran 8.87 in qualifying and then 8.80 in the final; the previous record was 9.16, established at this same meet a year prior. Earlier in the day, Makeba improved her personal-best in High Jump, clearing the bar at 1.70m, ending second on missed attempts.
She missed out on a top-three spot in the Long Jump, but Makeba had a career-best indoor performance of 5.21m for that event. Her third-place throw of 11.15m was also a personal-best mark for Shot Put. "We're pleased all the way across the board," head coach Lance Harter said. "Our jumpers jumped well, our multi-event specialist competed in four of the five (pentathlon) events." Alcide, a sophomore, turns 20 in February.
Elsewhere, two St Lucians competed at the University of Missouri Invitational in the Hearnes Center. Lincoln University senior Mandela Clifford ran 6.83 and finished fourth in the men's 60m dash. In the women's version, Missouri State freshman Pernell Joseph was second with a 7.79 time. She was also fourth in the 200m, running in 26.25.
