St Lucia's Levern Spencer finished second in women's High Jump on Thursday at the Compeed Golden Gala, the third stop on the Samsung Diamond League series at the 1960 POlympic Stadium in Rome. The Commonwealth Games bronze medallist finished ahead of the likes of Frenchwoman Melanie Melfort, Vita Styopina of the Ukraine, Russia's Svetlana Shkolina, long-time rival Emma Green Tregaro from Sweden and veteran Spanish campaigner Ruth Beitia.
Reigning World Champion indoors and out and World Athlete of the Year Blanka Vlašić of Croatia cleared 1.95m to score her fifth victory in six years in the Italian capital, then went on to miss three times at 2m. Spencer was one of four athletes to clear 1.92m, taking second from Melfort on countback. Levern, an alumnus of Entrepot Secondary School in St Lucia and the University of Georgia, has just completed a lengthy training period in the United States in preparation for the Worrld Championships in Daegu, South Korea later this year.
