St Lucian-born quarter-miler Nyanka Kizzy Moise-Joseph will be a Lady Husky next fall. The 18-year-old will be a freshman at the University of Connecticut on a track and field scholarship next September, after committing to the schoool by signing a letter of intent last month.
Nyanka, whose roots are from Mon Repos, has been credited as one of the pillars of the Medgar Evers Preparatory High School programme that is one of the best high school track programmes in the United States this season. She is also one of the top students in her graduating class.
For Nyanka, Connecticut represents a balance between the track and the classroom, but she says she also felt an instant sense of connection to the Huskies programme, especially sprints coach Clive Terralonge, a former Jamaican World 800m champion.
Nyanka, who runs the 400m and 800m races individually, was a member of hte Medgar Evers relay teams that broke New York State records in the 4x200 and 4x400 indoors. “Everything is happening so fast, you don’t have time to recognize what you’re doing,” she said. “It’s like damn, we broke two state records. We got into college and there’s still more to do.”
