St Lucia has named 12 players, led by New York-based hitter Jason "Long" Octave, to contest the 2011 NORCECA Continental Men's Volleyball Championships.
A relatively experienced team, the St Lucia contingent will still find it tough going in Group A, against Canada, Mexico and Puerto Rico. St Lucia earned the right to compete at this tournament by virtue of winning the Eastern Caribbean Volleyball Association title in 2010. With the notable addition of Trinidad & Tobago-based hitter Kervin Jean, this is also essentially the same team that contested the World Championships opening round competition on home soil in 2009.
At last year's ECVA Championships, Octave was adjudged Most Valuable Player, whilst veteran Servin Mongroo was named Best Setter. St Lucia has had a long history of success at the Eastern Caribbean level, but has had difficulty translating that to competition at the wider regional level. Octave says the NORCECA tournament will surely teach the team some valuable lessons as they prepare for next year's ECVA Championships.
Coached by Kendall Charlery, with the assistance of Cuban coach Luis Oviedo, the St Lucia side has a third player with substantial overseas experience in the person of Amobi Armstrong, who played collegiate volleyball at the New Jersey Institute of Technology. 2010 Junior Volleyball Player of the Year Julian Bissette has also been included. The team leaves for Puerto Rico on Saturday 27 August. their playing schedule runs 29-31 August.
