University of Arkansas junior and Saint Lucia native, Makeba Alcide took top spot in women's Pentathlon, Friday evening at the Razorback Invitational. The 22-year-old graduate of St Joseph's Convent in St Lucia also broke her previous National Record for that event, and moved into fourth place on the Razorbacks' all-time leaderboard.
Makeba got the five-event competition off to a fast start at Randal Tyson Track Center in Fayetteville, Arkansas. She was second in 60m Hurdles in a career-best 8.74 seconds, a National Record in and of itself. That effort earned her 965 points. In High Jump, Makeba won with 1.76m (5'9.5" for 928 points). Her best High Jump mark is 1.79m, which she achieved at least twice in 2011.
In the Shot Put, Makeba's 11.69m throw was second behind Liana Fuentes' 12.68m, but her 641 points kept her on course. The mark was six inches off her PB of 11.85m, last year at Conference Championships. In the penultimate event, Makeba's Long Jump of 5.39m was good only for seventh, but with 3202 going into her last event, she was within sight of the record.
In the 800m, one of her stronger events, Makeba won for the second time. Her 2:22.10 was only her fourth-best run ever, but it was enough to beat Stanford's Madeline Treasure by over a second, enough to earn the 5'9" former CARIFTA medallist 795 points, and enough to lift her to 3,997, beating her February 2011 total of 3959 and bringing her closer to two other landmarks.
Makeba passed Etienne Chaplin's 2008 mark of 3,986 to go into fourth place on the Arkansas all-time performance list. The school record for Pentathlon is DeeDee Brown's 4,141-point performance from 2002. Automatic qualification for this year's NCAA Division I Indoor Track & Field Championships, 9-10 March in Nampa, Idaho, at Boise State's Jackson Track at the Idaho Center.
Makeba's point compilation is third-best in the NCAA.
Amazing achievements Makeba! Congrats
