4 Wins for Gustave, EU Tennis Starts 2-0
Springfield, Missouri. — Evangel University women’s tennis opened their season Saturday with two wins the Cooper Tennis Complex in Springfield. EU won their first match 9-0 over John Brown (Ark.). The Lady Crusaders swept all nine games and owned 48-14 advantage in games won during the six singles matches with freshman Amy Grossklag winning her match 8-0 in the pairing of top singles players.
The second match against Stephens (Mo.) also went to 9-0, continuing a contest that started Friday but had play suspended. The Crusaders won all three doubles matches and never dropped a game winning each pairing 8-0. The wins give Evangel a 2-0 start to their season. They are scheduled to play their next games Monday, March 5 against St. Francis (Ill.) and Coastal Georgia in Orlando, Florida.
Joining a team that includes players from Missouri, Texas, Florida, Mexico and Brazil, Aquila Gustave from Cantonment, Vieux Fort, Saint Lucia acquitted herself well in her first two collegiate contests. The freshman joined Phine Mulumba on the number 3 team, beating Tiffany Prieb and Marissa Podgorski of John Brown 8-4 and then defeating Emily Mendoza and Hannah Hessner of Stephens 8-0.
In singles competition, Gustave is playing in the number 5 spot. She got the better of John Brown's Prieb 8-2 and went on to down Stephens' Mendoza 8-0.
