Levern Spencer will be Saint Lucia's sole representative at this weekend's IAAF World Indoor Championships in Istanbul, Turkey. She is the only woman from the Caribbean to have been entered for women's High Jump, amongst a field of 22 athletes. Qualifying is scheduled to begin at 3:30am Friday Eastern Caribbean time, and Levern will have to reverse the form she exhibited at her opening meets if she is to make the final 12. Eight of the individuals entered for the event have gone over two metres at some point in their careers, and Saint Lucia's 27-year-old star has been well short of her personal-best 1.98m so far this year.
Levern, who was recognised as Saint Lucia's Female Sports Personality of the Year 2011 last month, is presently at the World High Jump Centre, part of the German Sport University in Cologne, Germany. She is working under the supervision of Dr. Wolfgang Ritzdorf, after working with coach Wayne Norton at the the University of Georgia since 2005. She has not ended a season with a height lower than 1.86 since 2002.
Meanwhile, Darvin Edward, who was Saint Lucia's other qualifier for World Indoors, has been withdrawn due to injury, according to Saint Lucia Athletics Association president, Cornelius Breen. Darvin cleared a personal-best 2.31m at the World Championships in Daegu last year, having earlier in the season surpassed the mark of 2.28m he needed for an invitation to Daegu, Istanbul and the London Olympics.
Levern, Darvin and swimmer Danielle Beaubrun are Saint Lucia's three qualifiers - for now - for London 2012.
