Saint Lucia is sending three athletes to the inaugural 2014 Pan American Sports Festival in Mexico this weekend. All three will compete in athletics, just having completed their participation at the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, Scotland.
The Saint Lucia contingent includes Commonwealth Games bronze medallist Levern Spencer, aged 30, and Jeannelle Scheper, who turns 20 in November, both competing in women's High Jump. Scheper placed fourth in Glasgow. The third athlete is Albert Reynolds, contesting the men's Javelin Throw. The women's high Jump is slated for Friday morning, 15 August. The men's Javelin Throw is just after 1pm the following day. The athletics schedule at the Estadio de Atletismo Jesús Martínez “Palillo” in Mexico City covers just those two days.
The Pan American Sports Festival is a multi-sport event organized by the Pan American Sports Organization for well over 3000 athletes from the 41 nations of the Americas. The event, which includes 24 sports in this its first edition, is being held over the course of three months, 11 July to 30 September, in several districts across Mexico. The event is staged in collaboration with the Asociación de Confederaciones Deportivas Panamericanas and the Pan American elements of the Olympic movement.
The main purpose of the games is to serve as a development and training event to aid countries with their preparations for the Toronto 2015 Pan American Games and the Rio de Janeiro 2016 Olympic Games. The winner in each event at the Pan American Sports Festival will qualify directly to next July's Pan Am Games.
