New National Record, But Disappointing NCAA for Alcide

Makeba Alcide finished the 2012 National Collegiate Athletics Association (NCAA) Women's Indoor Track & Field Championships as a second-team All-American, as named by the U.S. Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association. Makeba, a junior at the University of Arkansas, copped her third All-America accolade. Overall, the Razorbacks ended the meet in fifth place, collected seven first-team performers, five second-team honors and four honorable-mention accolades.

Competing at the Jacksons Track in Nampa, Idaho, with her second appearance at the NCAA Indoor Championships, Makeba finished 14th in the Pentathlon with 3,915 points. She began the day with a personal-best mark of 8.62 seconds in the 60m hurdles, despite being in the slowest heat by far. The performance was a new National Record for her native Saint Lucia and the Organisation of Eastern Caribbean States. Her previous best in the event of 8.72 came at the SEC Championships two weeks ago.

Unfortunately, Makeba followed up her strong hurdles run with a lacklustre effort of 1.66m in High Jump, just 11th overall in what should have been one of her stronger events coming in. With a career-best mark of 1.76, she left over 100 points on the table. Her 10.64m in Shot Put was again 11th overall, although her 5.70m mark in Long Jump - her second best of the season - was 9th. Makeba ended the competition with a run of 2:22.63 in the 800m, 8th in her heat, 13th overall and 14th for the competition.

With scores of 3,997 and 4,126 (albeit on an oversized track) this year, Makeba would not have been best pleased with the way the season ended. She will, however, be looking forward to an exciting and productive outdoor season, having established or matched personal-best marks across the board indoors.
