5 National Records For CARIFTA Swim Team


Team Saint Lucia returned from the 2012 CARIFTA Swimming Championships at the Betty Kelly Kenning Aquatic Centre in Nassau, The Bahamas with five new national records and one new age group record. Coach Jamie Peterkin and manager Lily Bergasse were full of praise for the swimmers regarding their motivation, spirit and performances.

Saint Lucia's two top performers were Jordan Augier and Runako Daniel. Jordan (above) just missed out on his first CARIFTA medal when he placed 4th in the 50m Freestyle boys 15-17, setting an age group record with a time of 24.63 seconds. The reigning Junior Sportsman of the Year in Saint Lucia, Jordan twice broke the national record in the 50m Backstroke with times of 28.41 and 28.22, placing 5th in the finals. He also broke the national record in the 100m Backstroke with times of 1:02.58 and 1:01.83 to again place 5th in the finals.

Also competing in the boys 15-17 age group, Runako broke the 50m Butterfly national record twice with times of 26.92 and 26.85 seconds and placed 7th in the finals. Former Junior Sportsman of the Year, Runako also set national records in the 100m Butterfly with a time of 58.93 in the preliminaries and 54.23 in the 100m Freestyle where he placed 5th in the finals. His other final was in the 50m Freestyle in 5th place behind Augier who swam 4th.

Saint Lucia's lone female swimmer, Thalia Bergasse swam in the girls 13-14 age group where she qualified in one final, the 50m Backstroke where she placed 5th with a time of 33.58. In two of her other five events she posted personal bests.

Jyasi Daniel was the island's lone other finalist when he qualified for the 100m Butterfly final and placed 5th with a time of 1:11.70, one of four personal bests for the promising youngster.

While not achieving any finals, Anthony Francois posted six personal bests of his seven events, Jason Beaubrun achieved two personal bests and Christian Andrew swam a personal best in his lone individual event.
