Windy Weekend, Mixed Fortunes for Saint Lucian Collegians


Facing windy conditions in El Paso, Texas, at the UTEP Invitational, junior Makeba Alcide racked up three top 10 all-time performances Saturday at Kidd Field for the No. 6 University of Arkansas Razorbacks women's track and field team. Makeba completed the 100m Hurdles in 14.12 seconds, but with a wind of 4.6 metres per second. Still, it was her fourth best in all conditions. Her mark of 1.69m for fifth in High Jump tied her sixth best performance, and her 5.29m in Long Jump equalled her eighth best.

Also in Texas, at the Texas State Invitational in San Marcus, Sam Houston State's Karique Stephen won Triple Jump, his 14.32m (46'11.75") giving him his third top ten finish of the season. At the Texas Invitational in the Mike A. Myers Stadium on the University of Texas, representing the Texas San Antonio Roadrunners, Jhorden Hunter ran 11.65 in the women's 100m with a wind of 5.6 m/s. She was second in Section 2, and tenth overall.

Over in Missouri, the Missouri State squad had a strong outing at the Tom Botts Invitational in Columbia at the Audrey J. Walton Stadium. Merica Moncherry won the 100m with a personal best 11.84. Pernell Joseph finished third with a time of 11.93. The Bears group of Joseph, Alethia Maximilien, Sue Ann Grant, and Moncherry won the the 4x100-meter relay in 45.69. Moncherry was also on the mile relay team that ran 3:47.98 for third.

At the Metropolitan Outdoor Championship in the Bauer Track and Field Center at Piscataway, NJ, the Rutgers Scarlet Knights got seventh in the 400m Hurdles through Danai Lendor. At the Spec Towns Invitational at the University of Georgia, South Carolina freshman Jeannelle Scheper was fourth in High Jump with a 1.65m clearance. And at the Snowball Open in Laramie, Wyoming, the only Saint Lucian athlete who stated home for the weekend was Lenyn Leonce, the University of Wyoming junior putting down a season-best mark and placing first in the Long Jump, 7.17m.
