Third Place for Makeba at Drake


DES MOINES, Iowa - Makeba Alcide ended third in women's Heptathlon at the 103rd Drake Relays, at Drake Stadium. University of Arkansas' third-year Saint Lucian student athlete narrowly missed out on her best combined-events score ever, her 5,646 total at the 2011 Southeastern Conference Championships establishing a National Record as well as an Organisation of Eastern Caribbean States sub-regional record.

On this occasion, the 22-year-old St Joseph's Convent alumnus had two personal-best marks on the opening day at Drake, a National Record of 13.96 seconds in the 100m Hurdles (third, 984 points) and a first-place 12.42m in the Shot Put (689 points). In between, she was second overall in High Jump with a height of 1.72m (879 points). She then ended the day with a 25.33 200m showing (857 points) for sixth overall.

At the end of day one, the former LIME CARIFTA silver medallist stood in third place with a total of 3,409, the second-highest day one total of her career. Jamaica's Peaches Roach-Findlay led with 3,611 points.

On day two, Makeba cleared 5.82m in Long Jump, a windy effort (4.0 metres per second, 795 points) for her second-best leap all-time. She threw the javelin 34.05m (554 points) and ended with a strong run of 2:17.10 in the 800m (863 points) for a third career-best mark and a total of 5,621. Roach-Findlay won with 5,709 points, and Poland's Olimpia Nowak (5,686) was second.
