Saint Lucia Takes Volleyball Gold

GROS ISLET, Saint Lucia, Sunday April 29, 2012 - Host Saint Lucia ousted St Vincent and the Grenadines 3-0 (25-16 , 25- 18, 25-13) in the Final of the 2014 World Championships Qualification Tournament of the NORCECA First Round Men’s Group B here at the Beausejour Indoor Facility on Sunday night.

Led by hitters Joseph Clercent, Julian Bissette and captain Dayne Williams, not to mention setter Servin Mongrooo and libero Benson Tertullien, Saint Lucia were easily the superior team among the four. They played unbeaten winning all five matches by 3-0 margins. The Saint Lucians were efficient in all facets of the game, which was underlined by the dominant score lines.

Triumphant Coach, Kendall Charlery was high in praise for his players and the back room staff for his team's commanding performance in the tournament.

"Our strength was our attack and the blocking came through", Charlery said.

The Saint Lucia Coach believes that the team's exposure to different techniques of coaching is also helping to lift the standard of play. At present, Saint Lucia's Volleyball set up is being assisted by Brazilian Joao Carlos Morales.

Coach of the St Vincent and the Grenadines team, Brian Burke admitted to the Saint Lucians' superiority.

"We were simply beaten by a superior team," Burke stated of his team's performance in the final.

Burke that his team was also guilty of making too many errors.

Looking ahead, Burke said his players will be using the knowledge gained from the tournament to take them through to other tournaments.

Earlier on the night, Grenada overcame a more organised and committed St. Eustatius outfit 3-0 (25-21, 25-14, 25-23) to take the third place.

St. Eustatius failed to win a set throughout the duration of the tournament, which spanned five matches.

Saint Lucia, St Vincent and the Grenadines and Grenada go forth to the second round in 2013 for the World Championships Qualification, whilst Saint Lucia and St Vincent and the Grenadines, have booked berths for the Eastern Caribbean Volleyball Association (ECVA) Senior Championships set for later this year.
