Paradise Water has once again assisted a world ranked athlete. First it was high jumper and Olympic bound Levern Spencer. This time around another high jumper Darvin Edwards who is also headed to the London Olympics, is the recipient of a sponsorship package totalling EC$7,000.
The presentation to Edwards was made at a recent press conference at Sunbilt in Cedars. The sponsorship package consists of $2,000 and the gift of life bottled by Paradise.
Officials on hand for the presentation were: Customer Service Officer Paradise Water, Delbert Willie; Brand Manager for Paradise Water, Andrea Hippolyte; General Manager Food and Beverage Peter & Company, Wayne Theobalds. Also in attendance was Dane Magloire who serves as Coach / Manager for Edwards.
The prolific high jumper grew up in Bocage and is a former student at Entrepot Secondary School - which happens to be the same learning institution as Spencer. Both athletes received their early training from Gregory Lubin.
This world ranked high jumper qualified for the 2012 Olympics after clearing a height of 2.31 metres which is a national and OECS record.
During his brief remarks Willie speaking on behalf of the sponsor said: “As you know Paradise Water has been committed to the development of sport not just in St Lucia but regionally and internationally. You can see this through the sponsorship of Levern Spencer and now Darvin. We saw the need to assist him after he came back from England to St Lucia and inquired about receiving assistance towards his Olympic campaign.”
Assistance to Edwards and Spencer would go beyond the Summer Olympics. Andrea Hippolyte of Peter & Company Limited (a member of the Goddard Group of Companies and distributors of Paradise Water) said: “Peter & Company Limited and Paradise Water are elated to be partnered with our very own son of the soil Darvin Edwards. It is through his hard work and dedication that he is St Lucia’s national record holder and currently ranked number one in the OECS.”
Referring to the fact that Edwards will represent Saint Lucia in London in a matter of weeks just a stone's throw from his former training ground, Hippolyte said: “We are extremely honoured to be part of this sponsorship for Darvin who has put country first. We applauded you and hope our kind gesture is appreciated.”
No doubt about it he is extremely grateful for the sponsorship and thanked the company during his acceptance speech. “I want to say thank you to Paradise Water for their support as I have come back home. They have provided me the opportunity to relax at home. No worries about water, but giving me that edge when it comes to hydration in training and support by providing a physiotherapist.”
Edwards expressed delight that a local company is willing to see not only himself and Levern, but St Lucia athletics and sports as a whole move forward and said “I really appreciate it.”
