Saint Lucia Teens Invited To 3x3 Basketball Showcase

The Saint Lucia Basketball Federation (SLBF) is getting set to host its first international tournament in coming months, the FIBA Americas 3x3 Tournament for the Lesser Antilles. In preparation for that competition, the SLBF is hosting a local qualifying series for players aged 15 to 17 years this calendar year.

The qualifier will be held on 5-6 November at the Vigie Multipurpose Sports Complex. Boys' and girls' teams born in 1999, 2000 and 2001 are invited to compete, with registrants required to express an interest by Thursday 3 November. All four-member squads must register on 3x3planet.com.

It will be a first ever opportunity for local school-age girls to get involved in competitive basketball, with Saint Lucia having won the girls basketball competition at this year's Windward Islands School Games. With just four players required per team, it will be much easier for schools, clubs and communities to get involved.

In the past, in fact, Caribbean netball has produced a number of outstanding basketball players for the US collegiate system and even the pro ranks. The netball fraternity will certainly want to be involved in what could be a golden opportunity to develop some of the island's budding athletes.

With just six teams having taken part in the last 3x3 exhibition put on by SLBF earlier this year, the Federation is hoping to get at least 15 teams involved this time around. Some schools, including Vide Boutielle and Sir Ira Simmons Secondary, are already seeking coaching support for their boys and girls teams.

A call has also gone out to officials and referees from around the island.

The 3x3 Lesser Antilles project will be one of the biggest ever undertaken by the SLBF, and top players from the November showcase will be invited to play with the national team.
