University of Arkansas sophomore Makeba Alcide has established her second St Lucia National Record for 2011, this time in the women's indoor Pentathlon. Meanwhile, Lincoln University senior Mandela Clifford forced his way into the record books by setting a new mark for the men's indoor 200m dash.
Makeba turned in a first-place performance in the Pentathlon at the Razorback Invitational for the No. 6 University of Arkansas women's track and field team. Her mark of 3887 points represents an improvement of by more than 500 points, and she set new personal bests in the High Jump and 800m.
Alcide's point total is No. 7 in the nation, less than 200 points from automatic qualification for the NCAA Division 1 Indoor Track & Field Championships, 11-12 March in the Rhonda & Frosty Gilliam Indoor Track Stadium at Texas A&M. Makeba missed joining Arkansas' top-5 performers by just 42 points.
"We're obviously elated with our multi-event athletes," head coach Lance Harter said, speaking of his number six ranked team's performance on Friday afternoon, and speaking specifically to the Pentathlon. "They had really good days but we know there's room for improvement. Today was a good day."
Meanwhile, at Indiana Relays, Mandela was sixth in the men's 200. Having clocked 22 seconds flat last weekend, the 24-year-old was confident that some time this season he would run below the 21.88 seconds established as St Lucia's National Record on 15 February 2003 by Anselm Felix at Boston.
That time was Friday evening, as Mandela ran 21.67 seconds to win his heat in a timed final. He also ran a personal-best 6.79 seconds to finish third in the 60m final, edging closer to the 6.66 clocked by Ronald Promesse on 19 February 1999 at Colorado Springs, Colorado, competing for UTEP.
Also at Indiana, Missouri State freshman Pernell Joseph had a personal best in the 200m, leading her team by finishing seventh in the seeded heat, running in 25.49 seconds. Joseph also qualified the 60m semifinals, 8th in 7.82 seconds, but ran a disappointing 8.05 in the semis.
At the Don Barrett Air Force Duals in Colorado, University of Wyoming sophomore and St Lucia National Junior Record holder Lenyn Leonce won men's Long Jump with a mark of 7.38m, placed second in Triple jump with a performance of 14.18m, and ran 6.98 seconds to end sixth in the 60m dash.
Elsewhere, Jeannelle Scheper had an inauspicious weekend at the Texas A&M Challenge presented by Mondo, clearing 1.62m to finish seventh for the University of South Carolina, where she is a freshman. McKendree junior Chad Phillip clocked 7.31 to finish 14th in the 60 at Illinois Intercollegiate.
