The University of Arkansas played host to the Tyson Invitational this past weekend (11-12 February) and saw four St Lucian athletes in action, including Arkansas combined-events athlete Makeba Alcide, Lincoln sprinter Mandela Clifford, South Carolina freshman Jeannelle Scheper and Missouri State freshman Pernell Joseph.
Two weeks ago Clifford ran 21.67 seconds in the 200m dash at Indiana University Relays to set a new National Record for that event. On this occasion, he won heat 16 on the banked track at the Randal Tyson Track Center in Fayetteville, stopping the clock at 21.49 to establish yet another record and ending 22nd overall. Mandela's new National-Record time is the fourth-fastest in Division 2 of the National Collegiate Athletics Association (NCAA) this season.
Meanwhile, Alcide and Scheper competed in High Jump, finishing third and sixth, respectively. Both athletes cleared 1.68m, but Alcide (currently ranked 18th in NCAA Division 1 for the indoor Pentathlon) finished better on fewer misses. Joseph completed the 60m and 200m races in 7.77 and 25.74, both career-best performances for the 20-year-old from Vieux Fort.
Over at the USAF Academy in Colorado, University of Wyoming student athletes Jeremiah James and Lenyn Leonce competed at the Air Force Invitational. Jeremiah won the men's Triple Jump with a clearance of 15.75m, his season best and 16th in NCAA Division 1. Lenyn, a sophomore, won the men's Long Jump with a distance of 7.45m, three centimetres shy of his personal-best mark in that event.
