COLUMIBA, S.C. -- Sophomore Jeannelle Scheper from the Gamecock women's track and field team has been named AgSouth Athlete of the Week.
Scheper opened her 2012 track & field season in record form with her win in the high jump at the Virginia Tech Invitational that catapulted her to the top of the South Carolina all-time record books with a mark of 5¹11 1Ž2 (1.82m). The personal best mark for Scheper breaks Olympian Chelsea Hammond¹s eight-year old indoor mark of 5'10.5". Her mark falls just three centimeters short of an NCAA Championship automatic qualifying mark and only four centimeters short of the Saint Lucia National Junior Record (1.86m). Scheper ranks fourth in the NCAA and is the only sophomore in the country to clear over 1.80 meters so far this season.
Jeannelle is also the first Saint Lucian to qualify for the IAAF World Junior Championships in Athletics, next July in Barcelona, Spain. She was the only Saint Lucian medallist at last year's Commonwealthy Youth Games.
