Silver for Saint Lucia in ECVA Volleyball
KINGSTOWN, St. Vincent and the Grenadines: In the preliminary rounds of the National Lotteries Authority Eastern Caribbean Volleyball Association (ECVA) Under-16 Boys Championships at Arnos Vale Sports Complex, the host nation beat Saint Lucia 0-3 (20-25, 14-25, 22-25).
In fact, Saint Lucia won just one preliminary match, beating Antigua-Barbuda 3-1 (25-21, 25-27, 14-25, 13-25). But with just four teams entered, everyone made the elimination rounds, where the Battle of the Saints was joined once more between the second and third seeds.
This time, St Vincent & the Grenadines succumbed to their closest neighbours, as Saint Lucia got revenge and advanced to the final by beating SVG 3-0 (25-19, 25-8, 25-21). That set up a gold medal rematch between Saint Lucia and the unbeaten French St Martin.
The team fell to French St Martin 3-0 (25-21 25-20 25-11) in one hour, nineteen minutes, coming away with second place and the silver medal. Tevin "Flash" St Jean of Soufriere Comprhensive returned home with the best blocker accolade, one of just two awards not to go to FXM.
Saint Lucia captain Augustin Faulkner was magnanimous as he conceded St Martin's superiority. "We knew they were the better team and we came out playing it safe," admitted the St Mary's College student. but that did not work for us and they really worked hard for the win."
The boys team will turn out in full to support and cheer on their female counterparts as Saint Lucia prepares to host the ECVA Girls Tournament, March 2-5 at the Beausejour Gymnasium.
