French St Martin and St Vincent & the Grenadines were the winners Friday evening as the 2012 Eastern Caribbean Volleyball Association Girls Tournament got underway at the Beausejour Gymnasium in Gros Islet. The under-16 competition features just four teams.
The French girls got their tournament off to a positive start, holding off a spirited Antigua-Barbuda team to come away with a 25-13, 25-20, 25-20 victory. Saint Lucia, the home team, started well in their tilt against neighbours St Vincent & the Grenadines, but eventually succumbed 3-1.
In the opening set, Saint Lucia went to the technical timeout up 16-11, but SVG stormed back with a 14-0 run to win at 25-16. Looking less convinving in the second set, Saint Lucia went down to the same scoreline, but their confidence picked up in the third set, and they won 25-18. The fourth set seesawed for some time before St Vincent went to match point at 24-20, and although Saint Lucia threatened to rally, they eventually lost 25-23.
