Another Record for Makeba
In the grand scheme of things, Makeba Alcide's mark of 12.20m in women's Shot Put at Friday's Arkansas Last Chance may not amount to much. But it speaks to the continued all-around improvement being made by one of Saint Lucia's most promising young athletes, and her continued development as a combined events athlete.
Makeba has been setting records throughout the indoor season, whether personal marks or national and sub-regional. She currently holds the Saint Lucia record for the 60m Hurdles and Pentathlon, and the Organisation of Eastern Caribbean States mark for the latter event. she is in the IAAF world ranking for Pentathlon, and fourth in the NCAA.
Friday at the Randal Tyson Track Center in Fayetteville, the University of Arkansas junior reset her career-best mark in Shot Put, not once but twice. Previously an 11.85 thrower indoors, and with a best all-time performance of 12.09, she pushed the 4kg ball to 11.90m and then to 12.20 on her last attempt to finish third at the Last Chance meet.
Makeba's next challenge will be to pool all the personal-best marks she's been laying down this season, as she aims to improve her performance and standing in the five-event Pentathlon at the NCAA Division I Indoor Championships, 9-10 March at the Jackson Indoor Track in Nampa, Idaho. It's likely to be another record-setting occasion.
