Heineken Tennis Underway

The sixth annual Heineken Tennis Open got off to a fine start yesterday evening at the St. Lucia Racquet Club situated at Smuggler’s Cove Resort & Spa, said Tournament Referee Stephen Marcelle with the completion of nine matches being played in the Men's 40 and over Singles and 2 matches in the ladies singles division.

Local veteran tennis coach Titus Butcher based in Soufriere at Jalousie Hilton Resort & Spa defeated Anthony Roheman 6-3, 6-3. Derek Mogal beat Lester Alvis of the UK 6-2, 6-2. Keith Grenda of the USA had a close encounter with Anthony Bousquet winning 6-4 3-6 6-2. The evening saw a marathon match between Kim Louis and Vilan Edwards with Kim Louis coming from behind to win 5-7, 6-2, 6-1 in a 2 and a half hour battle. Denis Mauricette got the better of Dr Thushar Mirajka in straight sets 6-3, 6-1. And the match of the evening which had all spectators at the edge of their seats was between Martin Satney and Conrad Lovell, with Martin Satney defeating Lovell 6-4, 7-5.

In the Ladies Singles Round Robin Draw, after a nail-biting first set Saoil Miztani of Japan defeated Solange Stanislas on her debut 7-5, 6-2

Play commences this evening (Tuesday) from 6pm. Some matches to look forward to include Anthony Roheman versus Keith Grenda of the USA, Sergei Chavyrine of Russia versus Lester Alvis of Great Britain, Jane DuBoulay versus Anne Dickinson, Colin Hunte up against Derek Mogal and David Cooper meeting Toshihara Takafumi.
